"Go with your gut. You might fail every once in awhile, but you'll be right a lot."
Amanda Glazebrook, Risk Manager and Compliance Officer for Transport Services of Sullivan, walked us through the complexities of the trucking industry, and gave us some advice for our upcoming Trivia Night and individual businesses.
Glazebrook has been in the trucking industry for 18 years.
We see them everyday on our streets and highways - semi-trucks. "A truck is very vital to the economic prosperity of the United States," says Glazebrook.
In her role as Risk Manager and Compliance Officer, Glazebrook has to stay updated on all of the regulations for every state their trucks traverse. Then she has to train the drivers on those same regulations.
Meeting Amanda Glazebrook introduced us to concepts we hadn't encountered yet at other businesses, like:
- Different layers of insurance: general liability, worker's compensation, pollution liability, auto liability, cyber insurance
- Hazmat
- GPS tracking and cameras in trucks
- Sign-on bonuses
- State permits
- Hiring terminals
"[My job] is different everyday," she says. "[Trucking] is a profession that is much needed, but not a lot of people are going into it."
Other advice Glazebrook had for us: "Take risk. Invest in your business," and "Trust your gut. Trust your heart."
Thank you, Amanda Glazebrook, for breaking down the trucking industry for us in a very understandable way. We definitely learned a lot from our morning with you.
(And once again, our facilitator was busy taking notes and forgot to take any photos. Yes, we can only shake our heads, too.)
